SRF & RDF specifications.

Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) is produced from commercial waste such as paper, textiles and plastic. With a moisture content of less than 15%, SRF has a high calorific value and is primarily used in cement kilns.

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF)

Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) is produced from domestic waste such as biodegradable materials and plastics. RDF has higher moisture content than SRF. RDF is used in Combined Heat and Power (CHP) facilities where electricity and hot water are produced for communal heating systems. This approach produces far fewer carbon emissions.

A key benefit of converting waste to fuel is avoiding expenses associated with waste disposal. Disposal expenses include landfill tax; transport costs; and the cost of machinery damage on the landfill site. The client also has the added benefit of converting a wasted product into high added value fuel.

SRF and RDF drying process.

1. Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is pre-sorted into 3 primary waste streams.

  1. Saleable recyclable materials (including waste wood and metals).
  2. Non-recyclable material to be sent to landfill.
  3. High calorific Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) and Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

2. RDF, SRF, waste wood or other waste streams are loaded into the high capacity pre-mixing hopper to initiate evaporative drying.

3. On the drying bed, the PulseWave™ mixing motion ensures that every part of the material interacts with hot bed metal during the flow and receives an equal airflow.

4. Temperature-controlled Heatex air rises through the ventilated drying bed and directly into the waste stream to dry the material to the specified moisture content.

5. The final dry product can be used to generate heat and electricity at UK or European plants.

The European RDF & SRF market…

RDF / SRF exports have enabled UK waste producers to divert waste from landfill and convert it into energy, reducing our fossil fuel reliance and the need for landfill. RDF / SRF export also makes use of surplus European EfW capacity in countries which have found themselves in that position as a result of how they have historically developed their infrastructure capacity differently to the UK.

RDF / SRF export will continue to play a vital role and provide UK waste producers with a cost effective, non-landfill option – taking advantage of the spare capacity available in Europe – until the UK catches up and develops more domestic waste-fueled power generation capacity of its own.
